What Are Mast Cell Tumors?

Mast cells, a type of white blood cell, are present in many organs of the body. They play an important part in immune system function. However, occasionally, these cells experience abnormal growth, leading to tumors of the skin or the internal organs. Generally, they occur in animals over 4 years of age. These tumors can be benign or malignant, and may, in some cases, metastasize to other areas of the body.

Symptoms of Mast Cell Tumors

You may find a raised, hairless bump on the trunk of your cat’s body. The bump itself may appear red or irritated. The cat may lick or chew at the growth, causing ulceration. Growths can also occur on internal organs, such as the spleen. The animal may vomit, lose its appetite, have diarrhea or may become listless.

Diagnosis of Mast Cell Tumors

A fine needle is used to draw fluid and cells from inside the tumor, which is then analyzed and staged for the progress of the disease. If the tumor is on the skin, your pet may not need sedation for this procedure. However, if the tumor lies on internal organs, sedation is administered, and ultrasound is often used to locate the tumor. Blood work, bone marrow testing and x-rays may also be done to diagnose the extent of the disease.

Treatments For Mast Cell Tumors

Because manipulation of mast cell tumors releases histamines that can be damaging to the animal’s body. Antihistamine medications can help to alleviate this problem. Surgical removal of cysts is the recommended treatment for mast cell tumors. Cats with skin tumors generally have a good outcome from this surgery. Animals with tumors located inside the body may have recurring tumors and generally do not fare as well. Chemotherapy drugs are sometimes used along with surgery to improve outcomes.
