Quality Care From Our Animal Hospital Near Las Vegas
At Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital, we're proud to be your trusted animal hospital near Las Vegas. From preventative care to treatment for serious illnesses and diseases, we're your one-stop shop for all your pet's health and wellness needs. One of the more common questions pet owners ask us when they come into our office for a pet exam or other routine appointment is "how can I tell if my pet is overweight?" Our veterinary team will always weigh your pet at his or her annual exam, and we'll tell you whether or not your pet is an ideal weight. In between appointments, however, we do have some guidelines to keep an eye on your pet's figure.
How to Know if Your Pet is Overweight or Obese
Although some people may think a chubby pet is a cute pet, obesity is never a laughing matter. In fact, obesity in pets can drastically reduce a pet's quality of life while making them prone to serious medical problems, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Not sure if your pet is a healthy weight? There are a few telltale signs to watch for that could indicate your pet is overweight or obese. For a dog or cat of a healthy weight, you should be able to easily feel your pet's ribs when you press your fingers lightly along the sides of their body. If not, your pet may have a weight problem. Furthermore, when you view your pet's figure from above, you should be looking for an hourglass shape, with your pet's mid-section being his or her most narrow part. If your pet has a round shape and there is no obvious indentation, your pet is likely overweight and possibly obese.
Finally, when viewing your pet from the side, take a look at his or her belly. Does it seem to "hang" or drag towards the floor? If so, your pet has excess abdominal fat, which is very dangerous to his or her health.
How Our Veterinary Hospital Can Help
If your pet is overweight or obese, our veterinary hospital offers a variety of weight management and nutritional solutions; these can help your pet lose weight gradually and safely, which is extremely important in avoiding serious health risks and concerns.
