Our Las Vegas Vet Explains the Importance of Spaying and Neutering Your Pets
Spay and neutering your pet is important for your pet and for helping reduce the pet population. There are hundreds of pets that are either homeless or in shelters as a result of not being fixed. Both in the United States and globally, animals are put down every day because they're unable to find good homes. There simply aren't enough homes to take in all the currently homeless pets out there. When you take the time to have your pet spayed or neutered, you can do a small but important part to control the pet population and indirectly help more pets find forever homes. There are a number of other benefits to spaying or neutering your pet as well. Some benefits include:
Health- Typically pets that are spayed or neutered tend to have longer, healthier life spans. Having your pet spayed or neutered can even reduce your pet's chances of developing certain kinds of cancer and other diseases.Spaying can reduce the risks associated with pregnancy and birth complications and is often recommended to spay your pet before their first heat.
Behavior- A fixed pet tends to reduce the urge to roam and search for a mate. Therefore reduces the risks of your pets from accidents such as getting hit by cars and getting into fights with other animals. In male dogs, neutering can reduce if not eliminate the urge to “lift their leg” and not be as assertive. In male cats, it is also known as “spraying” or “marking”. Your pet will often have a better, less aggressive temperament as well.
What to Expect From Spay and Neuter Surgery
Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital is proud to be a Las Vegas spay & neuter animal hospital. This is a rather routine procedure we can perform in our office and, in most cases, pets can return home either later the same day or the following day. When you bring your pet home from spay or neuter surgery, expect him or her to be a little fatigued or tired for a few hours as the anesthesia wears off. Furthermore, be sure to keep an eye on their sutures and make sure they're not biting or scratching at them.
